Drawing its name from the Sanskrit word for the heart chakra, Anahata Yoga is a classically-rooted yoga style that gives special emphasis to purifying and expanding the heart center, both physically and energetically. Yoga and breathing exercises that open the chest, shoulders and lungs invite the life force to flow through the body, freeing stagnant emotional energy and changing the defensive, caved-in posture to a courageous, heart-forward posture. Meditation and mindfulness practices teach students to connect with the deep wisdom of their hearts and the infinite spirit that resides there, awakening the heart’s natural qualities of love, compassion, forgiveness, courage, joy and faith.
What to expect
Anahata Yoga practice is designed to be simple, safe, and adjustable for all levels, ages, and physical conditions. Students are taught to modify postures and to use props as necessary. Teachers offer nurturing hands-on adjustments. The classroom atmosphere is non-judgmental and inclusive.
Ana Costa developed Anahata Yoga in 2001 after many years of practicing and teaching other yoga styles. Her special focus on opening the heart center was inspired by the teachings of her guru, Parmahansa Yogananda. Certified Anahata Yoga teachers now exist all over the world.
