Meditation

Meditation is a broad term that refers to a variety of practices designed to develop one’s awareness and unfold the potential of the mind. Depending on the particular tradition or style of meditation, the goal may be mental, physical, psychological, spiritual, or all of the above. Different meditation practices may involve developing mental discipline and focus, practicing non-attachment to one’s emotional reactions, cultivating qualities of compassion or devotion, or experiencing higher states of consciousness and spiritual oneness. Most meditation practices involve quieting or clarifying one’s thoughts, which has a calming effect on the mind, body, and psyche.

What to expect

During a Meditation class, students will learn techniques to train their attention in a particular direction, whether it is focusing on a particular subject, witnessing their own thoughts and feelings, or transcending the world of thoughts and experiencing pure awareness.  Various techniques might use a repeated mantra or sound, focused breathing exercises, visualizations, or contemplation of scriptural passages.

Meditation is an ancient practice dating back thousands of years. There are many different kinds of meditation, from those rooted in various spiritual traditions to modern secular practices utilized for stress reduction.
