Yoga Nidra is an ancient technique for creating a state of heightened conscious awareness within deep sleep. Also known as Yogic Sleep, the term Yoga Nidra applies both to the technique and to the state of consciousness achieved. Yoga Nidra uses various mindfulness techniques to systematically create a state of complete physical relaxation, while the mind is led to deep meditative state of stillness and clarity. The effects are deeply restorative for the physiology and the nervous system, and deeply purifying for the mind and emotions, helping to remove layers of stress throughout the psyche.
What to expect
During Yoga Nidra, students lie down comfortably with eyes closed. Using simple mental techniques, such as guided imagery or breath awareness, the students' awareness is guided systematically inward, away from the world of sensations and thoughts and into a deep, clear silence. Students relax into this conscious sleep for an average of 20-45 minutes, and emerge feeling exceptionally refreshed.
Yoga Nidra is part of the ancient yoga traditions of the far East. Like other yoga practices, it was brought to the West in the mid-twentieth century by an Indian yogi--in this case, by Parmahansa Satyananda Saraswati, the founder of the Bihar School of Yoga.
